Karen biked the California coast and Peter drove the support van.
We still camped a lot and slept in the van at Wal-Marts 3 times, and also stayed at motels.
One night we were at Point Mugu Naval Base campground, which was very inexpensive and very nice!
We didn't run into as many folks on cycling trips, but we saw hundreds of riders.
There was a group of twelve skateboarders who were riding from San Francisco to Ventura, who were clearly not used to riding and had no biking gear except what they had borrowed for paniers. They were riding in jeans or board shorts and most of them didn't have helmets. Reminded me of our bike trips when I was a kid! Except that I ran into a few of them who were lighting up at a rest stop...
Didn't have many traffic problems, although Peter didn't like driving in Southern California. At all.
Drivers allowed for the bike lane and the roads were mostly good.
There was a strange detour in Ventura where the highway became freeway and the bike lane was routed onto the Northbound shoulder....but it was short, luckily.
I rode more miles per day, in general, than in the earlier part of the trip. This was due to better weather, fewer hills, and no trailer!
Found the coast to have distinctions from forest to farmland to BEACHES. In the southern section the route took me on a lot of beach boardwalk.
The least friendly people by far were serious bicyclists with expensive gear. The friendliest were other cyclists making trips.
Saw crews gearing up for the first day of Race Across America in Oceanside!
