Trip Prep

Decided to do the blog thing instead of Facebook, so here we are.
We leave in 2 days for Seattle!

This trip is quite a bit different from the last.  We decided to go unsupported due to the relatively short distances between inhabited towns, Starbucks, McDonalds, Walmarts, KOAs, Best Westerns and bike shops (oh and hospitals, just in case).  Have studied up and talked to lots of people who know, so we're confident that there are lots of cyclists on the route and motorists are used to seeing them.

We tested out our little trailers and decided that we needed one two-wheeled, larger model and one single-wheel smaller.  Placerville Bike Shop guys have helped us get the gear we needed.  Peter is bringing everything he can from home.  Karen is secretly putting stuff back before the departure.  Looks like Peter will win.

We have nice, light touring bikes this time because the roads are generally in good condition.  Last time there were lots of choppy roads and times we had to get off the road in a hurry.  We have more climbing this time and are ready for the first few rainy weeks.  We set up the tent in the backyard and slept in it with the cats.  It seems comfy enough for two old folks.

Training check in:  Karen has 910 miles on the odometer (since August) and several hundred at the gym!
Elbow injury from falling in the cleats seems healed...Have resolved not to fall anymore.  Check.
And...Peter is Peter.

So we're ready!

Found a rental minivan that we pick up at Sac airport Monday morning and drop in Seattle on Wednesday.  Then we take the ferry to Bainbridge Island and ride to Port Angeles for the official start.

Send us your messages and let us know if you have tips on free lodging on the coast!

  2. Hey guys, all is well here in P'ville. I have had 7 dropouts from the cast of Oliver (all the Carlsons) but have found replacements and the show will be just fine. How was your first couple of days on the Washington Roads? It looked like you might have go some rain, but that was to be expected. Take care and stay safe. Lanny
